Litter and Flytipping
Zero Waste Scotland played a key role in the creation and development of Scotland’s National Litter and Flytipping Strategy, published in 2023, which sets out how national and local government, business, third sector, communities and individuals can work together through innovative behaviour change, improved infrastructure and strengthened enforcement to better value our resources as a society and prevent the escape of materials from our economy.
With the strategy now in place, Zero Waste Scotland provides that broader support for the prevention of litter and flytipping through our focus on rewiring our economy – addressing overconsumption, encouraging reuse and sustainable behaviours, and helping businesses design out waste.
Below are links to some of our legacy projects:
- We supported Scottish Government to develop the Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse (CoPLaR) and associated statutory guidance.
- We carried out research to understand perceptions and behaviours around litter and flytipping and published this in two reports.
- We offered grants to private landowners to support them to prevent flytipping on their land.
- And we developed our award winning litter prevention campaign, Scotland is Stunning.
