We’re Scotland’s circular economy public body, working with government, business, and communities to rewire the economy from our current “take, make, waste” model to one where we make the most of the materials we have.
As Scotland’s dedicated circular economy public body, we guide the nation to reduce its consumption of natural resources while helping deliver a more resilient and thriving economy in the most effective way possible.
What we do
Our role is simple: We help make circularity easier so that Scotland’s economy can be stronger and more prosperous.
We do this by turning evidence into action, bringing the right people together, and tackling the barriers to change – in turn, creating the conditions for a more resilient economy, a healthier environment, and stronger communities. This is how we can deliver a thriving economy, whilst also addressing the climate crisis.
Our Impact So Far
Since 2014, we’ve been at the forefront of Scotland's work on resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable growth. Through initiatives such as the Circular Economy Investment Fund and Circular Economy Business Support Programme, we’ve provided funding, expertise, and practical assistance to help Scottish businesses develop circular business models. This support has helped over 200 companies, created 70 jobs, and delivered carbon savings equivalent to removing 40,000 fossil fuel cars from the road.
Over the past decade, we’ve acted as a trusted advisor to government, helping shape the research and policies, such as the Circular Economy (Scotland) Act 2024, which are needed to move Scotland away from a reliance on waste and towards a more circular, resource-efficient economy.
We’ve delivered national behaviour change campaigns that encourage practical actions to keep valuable materials in use for longer and increased public awareness of circular economy principles. Initiatives such as our food-waste awareness Can-paign and single-use products Trial Period campaigns
Additionally, we’ve worked with local authorities, communities, and regional partners to help deliver circular economy solutions across Scotland. Campaigns such as the Recycling Improvement Fund and Circular Cities and Regions programme which have supported improvements to local infrastructure, strengthening recycling and reuse systems.
Supporting Scotland's Circular Economy
Today, our role extends much further. From helping deliver Scotland's Circular Economy Strategy and facilitating progress in key sectors, to delivering new research and policy measures, and providing systems-change solutions. By which we mean changing the way systems work - including the policies that guide decisions to the services, infrastructure, and support people rely on. We bring these elements together to help make sustainable choices easier for everyone. These measures support Scotland to adopt the circular and sustainable behaviours needed to keep valuable materials in use for longer.
