Household Intervention Plan for Food Waste Reduction (HHIP)

10 Jun 26 2 minutes

What is the HHIP?

The Scottish Government is developing its first comprehensive Household Intervention Plan for food waste reduction, led by Zero Waste Scotland. The plan uses behavioural science to tackle avoidable household food waste, which costs Scots approximately £1.3 billion annually and makes up the majority of the nation's food waste.

The plan tackles the environmental, social, and economic crises of food waste.

This initiative sits alongside the Circular Economy (Scotland) Act and the broader Circular Economy and Waste Route Map to 2030. The route map establishes a strategic, system-wide approach to responsible consumption and resource management.

To explore some of the research and data that inform these targeted behaviour changes, you can read the Food for Thought Research or the complete Scotland's Circular Economy and Waste Route Map to 2030 via the Scottish Government website.

Zero Waste Scotland are leading on this work alongside system wide stakeholders: households, local authorities, community groups, and food system actors directly to ensure a collaborative approach to the plan’s development.

How can you get involved?

Zero Waste Scotland is keen to work with key stakeholders who can be/provide:

Stakeholders who can champion, promote, and increase visibility of plan & can reach specific target groups/communities in the food system & adjacent.

Stakeholders who can implement/influence food waste reduction actions within their organisation

Stakeholders who can offer specialised knowledge, can provide data, conduct research, or support in measuring impact.

If we haven’t already been in contact, but you feel your organisation should be involved, please contact us at Food.Drink@zerowastescotland.org.uk.
