Green Champion: Volunteer role description

15 Oct 26

The following volunteer description has been developed as an example of how businesses can establish Green Champion volunteer roles to support food waste reduction and wider sustainability objectives. Organisations are encouraged to adapt the responsibilities, criteria and wording to reflect their own structure, operations and priorities.

Green Champions can play an important role in engaging colleagues, promoting sustainable behaviours and supporting the implementation of food waste reduction initiatives across a business.

Volunteer duties

You will have the willingness to learn about ways to reduce our environmental impact, educate and encourage fellow colleagues on how they can play their part, and ultimately help contribute towards improving our environmental impact.

The role of a green champion is a voluntary one and ideal for motivated individuals who are passionate about sustainability.

The main responsibilities of the Green Champions are:

  • Helping to reduce our food waste by implementing more efficient and sustainable processes
  • Engaging with colleagues and promoting a sustainable culture
  • Supporting and advising colleagues who are responsible for collecting and collating waste data with any queries
  • Attend innovation workshops where we collaborate to design and implement food waste reduction policies and procedures

Green champions will also be, ensuring what we do throw away is done so correctly, being knowledgeable on the use of seasonal ingredients across our menus, and being able to cascade messaging to colleagues.

Volunteer criteria

We welcome any individual who is interested to be a Green Champion. In particular:

  1. Green champions will be chosen based on their enthusiasm for the role
  2. We would encourage individuals to volunteer where they have strong influence within the company to motivate colleagues and effect positive change.
  3. To be a successful green champion, you will also need excellent relationship and communication skills along with the ability to commit some of your time to the role.
