We’re proud of the level of work life balance we offer colleagues. Here’s what you can expect if you work with us:

New starts 
Everyone was new once, and we’ve made being new at Zero Waste Scotland the best experience we can. After all, we want to start as we mean to continue. During your induction, you’ll get a complete picture of how the business works by meeting experts from key areas, as well as an understanding of how your role fits into that, how you can contribute and, most importantly, where to go for a cup of tea or coffee.

Our people strategy
This reflects our culture as an employer, setting out our commitments to colleagues, as well as what we expect in return. The strategy is a key element of our corporate plan.

Annual leave and public holidays
We know that time away from work is important, so we offer a generous annual leave entitlement of 30 days per year. We also offer eight additional public holidays. Annual leave and public holiday entitlement are pro-rated for part time employees. We also offer colleagues the ability to purchase additional annual leave of up to five days per year (pro-rated) to help out with school holidays, once in a lifetime trips or to generally just have more time off.

No one wants to work until they’re 90, so the Zero Waste Scotland pension plan has been set up to provide you with money in retirement. We pay in to your pension pot if you make contributions too. The Scheme is currently based upon a defined contribution scheme with a 10% contribution from ZWS based on a minimum of 3% contribution from you. We also offer a salary exchange agreement for your contributions.

Private Healthcare Scheme
You’ll have the option of joining our Aviva Private Healthcare Scheme. The costs of your premium for this will be paid for by Zero Waste Scotland.

Life Assurance
Should the worst happen, it’s good to know that your loved ones are supported.  As an employee of Zero Waste Scotland, you will be added to the Group Life Assurance Scheme which will pay three times your gross annual salary to your chosen beneficiary in the event of your death.

Employee Assistance Programme
All colleagues have access to an employee assistance programme which provides 24/7 confidential support and counselling to ensure you can access support whenever you need it.

Enhanced family leave
To ensure you can enjoy the important moments in life, we offer generous maternity, adoption, shared parental and paternity leave (dependent on length on service).

Volunteering scheme
We offer our colleagues two paid days of leave per year to participate in the volunteering activities that are important to you.

Cycle to work scheme
A tax-efficient way to purchase a bicycle through salary sacrifice for the purposes of travelling to work.

Sick pay
We pay sick pay for authorised periods of absence due to sickness or injury (entitlements based on length of service) so that you can focus on getting better.

Financial contribution towards the price of glasses or contact lenses for display screen use is available.

Staff loan
Interest-free loans are available for purchasing public transport annual season tickets.

Our pay is competitive, fair and transparent and we’re committed to paying the Scottish Living Wage and are an accredited living wage employer. Salary progression is by annual increments to the top of the appropriate band.  We are also committed to being an accredited Living Wage Employer.

Working hours
Our standard full-time working week is 35 hours.

Professional development
Training and development opportunities are available to enable colleagues to acquire new or improved skills, competencies or knowledge. Colleagues are also entitled to 21 hours a year of protected CPD time.

Flexible working
We’re supportive of flexible working and offer part-time working, compressed hours and home working. Some roles aren’t as flexible as others, but we’ll always aim to make sure your working life is well balanced with your life outside the work place.

Early careers
We want to support people in their early careers and have now run several extremely successful internships.
