A study into the organic recycling sector in Scotland.

Key findings

The survey found:

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) and composting sector grew by an extra 30,000 tonnes in 2014
  • An increase in the number of PAS 100 certified plants, from 22 plants in 2013 to 25 plants in 2014
  • Local authorities are the main source of feedstock to composting sites in Scotland, accounting for 85% of all input material in 2014.

The growth of the organic recycling sector has coincided with the introduction of the Waste (Scotland) Regulations in January 2014 that require all food businesses and local authorities to separate their food waste for recycling.
