Scottish tourism sector set to unlock sustainability savings

Resource Efficient Scotland, a programme of Zero Waste Scotland, is highlighting the benefits of resource efficiency this Scottish Tourism Week (2nd – 8th March) with the publication of new support materials for hospitality businesses and video case studies from Two Fat Ladies, Glasgow and Best Western’s Kings Manor Hotel, Edinburgh, Crieff Hydro and Radisson.

This comes as the Scottish Tourism Alliance, which is based at the iconic Stirling Jail, is encouraging members to save money and improve their environmental performance by becoming ambassadors of the Resource Efficiency Pledge. 

Central Design Agency and Destination Stirling, who are both also based at Stirling Jail, have also made the Resource Efficiency Pledge, a free initiative coordinated by Resource Efficient Scotland which asks signatories to complete a number of ‘actions’ to reduce their use of energy, water and raw materials.

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland said:

“This endorsement from the Scottish Tourism Alliance will go a long way to effecting real change and I hope to see other businesses following their example by making a Resource Efficiency Pledge. 

“As a conclusion to a memorable 2014, we have developed a new guide on how to plan and run sustainable events, sharing the success of legacy events Ryder Cup, Glasgow Commonwealth 2014 and Festival 2014. Written for event organisers canny suppliers of venues, catering and other services should read it too to know what their customers will be expecting.”

Marissa Lippiatt, Head of Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient Scotland programme said:

“The tourism and hospitality sectors are of huge importance to the Scottish economy and could stand to achieve considerable savings by using energy, water and raw materials more efficiently, as demonstrated in our new video case studies. These case studies form part of a wide range of bespoke support tools, guidance and funding opportunities which we have on offer for the sector to take advantage of.”

Marc Crothall, CEO, Scottish Tourism Alliance said:

“Scottish Tourism Week is the ideal opportunity for businesses to raise their profile and consider how they work.  Scottish tourism businesses hold an international reputation and ensuring we do all we can to operate efficiently can only help us to succeed.

“STA has an important role in sharing best practice across the industry and working with our staff to promote sustainability, and becoming an ambassador of the Resource Efficiency Pledge is a great way to do this.  I would urge all of our members to make a Pledge and re-evaluate how they use resources to safeguard the environment and help the bottom line.”
