Booker scoops inaugural ‘green’ wholesaler award

A long-term company-wide commitment to environmental sustainability has seen Booker named as the first ever winner of the Scottish Wholesaler and Zero Waste Scotland’s Green Award.

Presented at the Scottish Wholesaler Awards on Thursday, the 13th of February, Booker was selected for its companywide commitment to cutting carbon emissions, reducing energy use, waste prevention and minimisation, boosting recycling, and stocking a range of environmentally friendly products.

Zero Waste Scotland, the government funded organisation that helped design Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme, has arranged for Booker and the other shortlisted firms, Sutherland Bros and Lomond, to receive a free Resource Efficient Scotland audit in recognition of their efforts.

The full efficiency review includes lighting, heating and insulation. There is also a focus around food waste, which is a significant source of carbon emissions. Audits can identify cost saving opportunities within businesses.

Iain Gulland, chief executive of Zero Waste Scotland, said: “All three finalists were able to demonstrate that environmental sustainability was at the heart of their business strategy. Their commitment is paying off in reducing our impact on the planet whilst improving efficiencies for the business itself.

“It is critical that we maximise the use of the materials we already have and by cutting energy use, preventing waste and boosting recycling, we will make a difference in addressing the climate emergency. If we are to be successful, Scotland’s wholesaler community will play a key role in promoting best practice.”

Resource Efficient Scotland is part of Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient Circular Economy Accelerator Programme, which will invest £73m in circular economy and resource efficiency projects, thanks to support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
