European Week for Waste Reduction

It’s that time of year again where organisations, businesses, universities and colleges, schools and individuals from across Europe are encouraged to take action to reduce waste.

This year EWWR is running from 17-25 November and we want YOU to get involved!

As always, the Love Food Hate Waste team is focussing on food waste. This year we are not promoting a particular theme, we are just encouraging you to make use of our materials to carry out activities that promote food waste reduction wherever you are in the country.

Taking part and registering your activity on the EWWR website also means you’ll be in with a chance of being nominated for an award in May 2019!

Why do we need to spread the word?

Across the world, a third of all the food that is grown or reared gets binned rather than being eaten. And here in Scotland £1.1 billion of food is thrown away- this is being lost from people’s wallets and the economy. On top of all that, it’s a loss of effort, energy and water, not to mention the methane that gets released when food rots in landfill, contributing to the problem of climate change.

How can I get involved?

There are lots of ways to get involved, but if you need some inspiration, download our EWWR Toolkit for ideas. In the meantime, here are some possible actions:

Hold a waste free lunch

Encourage neighbours, colleagues and students to take part in a communal lunch with a theme around making the most of good food and reducing use of single use plastic reduction.

Run an information stand

If you work in the Waste or Environmental Health team at a local authority, or if you are involved with Healthy Working Lives, you could run a stand for colleagues. Download our ‘Freeze or no Freeze?’ snap card game to help engage them.

Engage with us on social media!

Share your news and food waste reduction activities during EWWR - remember to tag @lovefoodhatewastescotland. You’ll be helping to spread the word and tagging us will help to share it nationally.

How can we help?

The Love Food Hate Waste team also has a range of resources that you can download to encourage staff, customers, colleagues, students, pupils and friends to make the most of their food, including:

We are also offering a selection of resources that you can order for delivery while stocks last. Maximums are per organisation:
