The first Zero Waste Plan for Scotland launched in June 2010 continues to build on past achievements and on-going progress, and has set a course for the actions that are required in the future. It proposes long term targets of recycling 70% of all Scotland’s waste, and only 5% of remaining waste ending up in landfill by 2025 (within an overall context of reducing waste).
Supporting innovation
Achieving zero waste will require fresh thinking and new approaches to reducing resource use and increasing the value we capture from resources within the economy.
Zero Waste Scotland wants to encourage world-leading innovations, making zero waste an engine of sustainable economic growth in Scotland.
We are currently supporting innovation in two distinct areas:
Waste Prevention
Closing date: 31 January 2012
We are seeking to encourage environmental innovation in the food and drink, hospitality and retail sectors in Scotland. We want to support innovations in product or packaging design that have potential to deliver scalable reductions in primary resource use, waste arisings or to transform end-of-life recovery options.

Recycling
Closing date: 30 September 2012
We are seeking to encourage innovation that will bring new recycling and resource recovery technologies to market and ensuring that results are shared widely and adopted by the recycling industry. In particular we want to support closed-loop or high-value recycling approaches that add most value to secondary materials. We will support recycling and manufacturing companies in both the private and third sectors.
