You can recycle all paper-based, liquid food and drinks cartons. After they are rinsed clean and squashed, you can put your cartons into your kerbside recycling containers (in most areas), or take them to your local carton recycling point. There are around 539 carton recycling points across Scotland. The cartons are collected and taken to a reprocessing facility.
Facts about cartons
- Cartons consist of two or three main materials; paperboard (70-90%), low density polyethylene (10-25%), and aluminium foil (about 5% in long life packages only) (ACE UK).
- More of us can now recycle cartons than ever before. Tetra Pak aims to provide some form of carton collection in all UK local authority areas by the end of 2008 (Tetrapak).
- Each year, UK manufacturers produce 55,000 tonnes of cartons. This equates to around 2.3kg of cartons per household, which could all be recycled.
