Tree-mendous! Wood machining company helps Green Network reach 150 member milestone

Specialist wood machining company Haldane UK, which manufactures staircases, handrails and other timber products, has become the 150th member of the Green Network for Businesses after saving £13,000 a year reducing its energy use and minimising waste, and is encouraging other organisations to follow suit.

The Green Network for Businesses, a Scottish Government project delivered by Resource Efficient Scotland, a programme of Zero Waste Scotland, is a network of businesses across Scotland who are leading the pack when it comes to reducing their energy, water or raw material use.

Organisations wishing to find out how green businesses in their local community have reduced costs and environmental impact can get in touch with the network to arrange a site visit, make contact with a local member or attend a an event in their area.

Marissa Lippiatt, Head of the Resource Efficient Scotland programme said:

“Scottish businesses could save £2.9 billion a year by using resources more efficiently, but it can be tough, with so many pressures in business, to know where to start.

“The Green Network for Businesses puts organisations in touch with other businesses who’ve already made meaningful changes to save money and resources – meaning businesses can learn from their real-world experience. With 150 businesses now in the network, whatever improvements you’re interested in and wherever you’re based, there’s a real business that can help.

“If your business has implemented resource efficiency measures we’d love to hear from you and welcome you to the network to help inspire others.”

Haldane UK produces made-to-measure timber products, which leads to a significant amount of resized wood offcuts which can’t be re-used by the organisations and is costly to dispose of.  To tackle their wood waste they opened an outlet centre onsite selling different shapes and sizes of hardwood offcuts and bags of undersized hardwood for fuel-burning stoves.

They also invested in two WT15 hand-fired wood-fuelled heater units, thanks to a Resource Efficient Scotland interest-free SME loan, which disposes of any remaining wood and provides adequate heating for the factories.

These improvements have helped the organisation to save £9,000 a year on waste disposal costs and a further £4,000 a year on heating bills.

Forrester Adam, Managing Director, Haldane UK said:

“Resource Efficient Scotland helped us to implement a new wood-fuelled heating system, which has improved our working environment, while also helping us reduce our ongoing business costs. We joined the Green Network for Businesses to share our implementation experience and help inspire other organisations. We enjoy positively participating in our local business community.”
