Transport Litter Group

In Scotland, an average 7 bottles and cans can be found along every 100 metres of major roads.

Not only a poor impression for visitors to the country, this litter problem is also dangerous for Scotland’s road users and wildlife.

The Transport Litter Group (TLG) is made up of representatives from those organisations responsible for the management and maintenance of public roads and railways. The main function of the group is to take forward a multi-agency approach to addressing the problem of litter in and around the transport networks and to develop possible options for tackling the issue.

Representatives meet regularly to discuss and review matters relating to litter and flytipping within their areas of interest, and concern themselves with the effect of relevant legislation, national policies and plans, organisational responsibilities and strategies, preventative and educational measures or campaigns, and mutually co-operative and efficient working procedures.

The group, through the chair, may make representations to the Scottish Government on issues arising and feed into strategic change. Along with an annual Action Plan to identify transport litter problems and solutions, with progress being reviewed at each meeting and the plan revised on an annual basis.

It also acts as a platform for establishing partnership working, networking and sharing ideas and best practice.

The Transport Litter Group hosted the first ever Transport Litter Week of Action (TLWoA), in August 2013, where local authorities, road, rail and other transport operators joined forces to raise awareness of the negative impacts and costs to us all of litter on Scotland’s transport network. Campaign materials were developed to complement the action carried out during the week and were adopted by a wide range of stakeholders. There was an overall reach of over 2million during the week and an excellent range of publicity. Further details can be found in the evaluation summary report.
