The Sustainable Retailer of the Year is awarded to retailers with a well though-out and implemented sustainability programme, looking at areas such as energy efficiency, best practice in minimising packaging and food waste, provision of recycling facilities for customers, and support for local recycling and sustainability initiatives.  The category is judged by an independent panel of judges.

The Moredun store, which relaunched in October 2014 underwent a refit with a focus on resource efficiency and was supported with funding and advice from Resource Efficient Scotland.  It features technologies including LED lighting with sensors to adjust to natural light from outside, recovery of heat from fridges and a building management system. Scotmid also built a brand new ‘Green Classroom’ – a learning space for the local community and businesses to learn about sustainability.

Stephen Boyle, Resource Efficient Scotland said:

“I’m delighted to present Scotmid’s Moredun store with this accolade.  Using resources efficiently can save businesses money and help them to boost their reputation and meet their customers’ expectations around environmental issues. Since the retrofit, the Moredun store has reported a 58 percent reduction in energy used, and as a result, is looking at the possibility of similar changes in 40 other stores.

“Retrofitting a store in this way is a bold example of how resource efficiency can be embraced and I hope to see other stores inspired by their example.  Resource Efficient Scotland can help retailers to make the best use of their resources and replicate Scotmid’s example in their own building, old or new.”

Patrick Duffy, managing editor of Scottish Grocer said:

"Scotland’s convenience stores and local shops are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability and the part it can play in commercial success.

"The 2015 Sustainable Retailer of the Year winner Scotmid’s Moredun store in Edinburgh is a fascinating example of pioneering retrofitting for resource efficiency.

"Not only has it hugely improved the store’s own performance in terms of energy use and control of waste but it will help Scotmid and others make future changes to existing stores that will bring major environmental and commercial benefits."

Adrian Lorimer, Head of Property & Development, Scotmid said:

“We are delighted to have received this award which recognises the work we carried out at Moredun and going forward into other parts of the estate.  We formed a good working relationship with Resource Efficient Scotland as we developed our energy saving package.”
