Review of Options for Reducing GHG Emissions from Landfills in Scotland – ORI001-001

Closing date:
14 Feb 2012

The Scottish Government is keen to develop an understanding of opportunities to reduce methane emissions from historic/closed landfill sites and to pilot some schemes at representative landfill sites. The object of this work is, by research and evaluation, to provide robust evidence on the possible options to enable action to be taken on securing better capture/mitigation/utilisation of methane emissions from those landfills located in Scotland, particularly for sites where gas flaring is not considered viable. This action could be taken through regulatory control or an incentive/grant approach.

This work will focus on the capture/mitigation/utilisation of methane from small operational landfill sites (where methane emissions are declining and its utilisation or flaring is therefore less viable), as well as closed landfill sites.
