Recycling & Collections Advisor (Two Available Posts)

Zero Waste Scotland is a programme managed by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on behalf of the Scottish Government. Zero Waste Scotland supports delivery of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste policy goals.  This role will be based in Stirling and supports activity within Zero Waste Scotland’s Business Resource Management Programme.  The Resource Management Team has a track record in providing information and advice to local authorities on the collection, recycling and processing of household waste. Our programme is extending to include more targeted support to local authorities to help them deliver all aspects of their Zero Waste requirements.  

In this role you will be responsible for the delivery of a range of activities to advise, support and project manage contractors to help local authorities meet their and the Scottish Government’s strategic aims. The focus of this support will consider collection systems for waste and recycling, infrastructure, processing, treatment and cost challenges faced by Scottish local authorities. There is a particular focus on delivering food waste collections to households which is a key area of support that Zero Waste Scotland will support local authorities. 

Job description:

Reporting to the Local Authority Manager, you will be responsible for the delivery of a range of advisory and other projects to develop practical guidance and tools to increase recycling and diversion of household and commercial waste from disposal and for the provision of technical advice to projects in receipt of Zero Waste Scotland/WRAP funding.  An initial key focus of the role will be to support the delivery of projects to increase the diversion of food waste from landfill. The role will require you to work with other teams in WRAP and across the nations as well as Zero Waste Scotland. The role will involve from time to time some overnight stays during the working week and remote working.

Key requirements:

You will have operational management experience of developing and delivering waste and recycling services for household and/or business waste and a broad knowledge of a wide range of collection systems covering kerbside collection, bring sites and household waste recycling centres.  If no direct operational experience then you must be able to demonstrate relevant project-based experience.  You will be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or hold a relevant professional qualification and be a confident presenter and communicator.
