Over 45% of Scotland’s Local Authorities supported Zero Waste Scotland’s Recycle Week, 20 - 26 June 2011. The week was used to highlight what Scotland can recycle at home, at work, school and while out and about and also celebrated the rise in Scotland’s national recycling rate over the last 11 years, from 5% to nearly 40%.
A selection of the range of actions undertaken by Recycle Week partners across Scotland include Angus and Dundee City Councils who demonstrated the recycling process to the public and schools during tours of their recycling facilities. Information sessions held by Inverclyde Council engaged almost 400 people, answering enquiries concerning local recycling. A ‘Recycle Zone’ for competitors at Jog Scotland’s 5km event on 21 June 2011 was created by collaboration between Scottish Borders Council, Zero Waste Scotland and BCCF Environmental. Key businesses within Scotland such as Diageo, Robert Wiseman Dairies and JP Morgan, showed their support, communicating the key messages to their workforce. Thank you to everyone that helped make Recycle Week 2011 a great success.
Recycle Week marked the beginning of the Zero Waste Scotland’s move towards Recycle Now for Scotland branding. Zero Waste Scotland are developing the Recycle Now brand for Scotland which will be used to replace the now defunct Waste Aware Pretzel. The reason behind this move is due to Scottish research demonstrating that 45% of the Scottish public recognise the Recycle Now brand and associate it with recycling, compared with a 13% recognition rate of the Waste Aware ‘pretzel’. This is largely due to the adoption by many major brands and retailers, who currently use the logo on their products, including Marks and Spencer, Royal Mail, Argos and Asda. In fact 60,000,000 product lines already have the Recycle Now ‘swoosh’ on their packaging.
Recycle Now for Scotland will be available by the end of October 2011 and the brand will build on the successful “everything here” concept with the innovative Recycle Now brand to create a powerful synergy.
To enable Local Authorities to get involved, Zero Waste Scotland will: provide a comprehensive set of brand guidelines for Recycle Now for Scotland, produce a suite of campaign materials (including posters, advertisements, leaflets and guides) and develop a partners website to allow easy access to campaign materials and guidelines. The bespoke Recycle Now for Scotland marketing collateral will be made available to Local Authorities from October. Should you need any more information, please get in touch with your local Regional Partnership Manager for further details.
