Put your foot down GENTLY

This is the latest challenge laid down by Tweed Green in Peebles – to encourage fuel efficient driving.

Written By Zero Waste Scotland  |  21 Mar 11

People are encouraged to fill their tanks and drive normally for a week, then record how many miles they travel.  Then the following week they follow the eco-driving tips (below) and again record the miles achieved.  The campaign is being promoted in the press and also with huge banners and leaflets at local petrol stations (see right).  Why not give it a try yourself.

Top tips;

  1. Shift to a higher gear as soon as possible.
  2. Anticipate road conditions and drive more smoothly.
  3. Maintain a steady speed in as high a gear as possible.
  4. Drive a little slower.
  5. Switch off if you’re stationary for more than a minute.
  6. Keep your tyres properly inflated.
  7. Switch off air conditioning.
  8. Close your windows if travelling at 50mph or more.
  9. Remove roof boxes and racks if not being used.
  10. Remove unnecessary items.
