Premier Mo’s Crowned Sustainable Retailer of the Year

Premier store, Mo’s of Blantyre has been crowned the Sustainable Retailer for 2013 at this year’s Scottish Grocer Awards.

Owner of Premier Mo’s, Derek Ralton, received the award from Iain Gulland, Director of Zero Waste Scotland and TV and stage star, Denise Van Outen, at a glittering awards ceremony in Glasgow on 14 March.

The family-owned store was chosen as the winner as a result of their innovative approach and dedication to sustainable business practice.  As well as investing in energy-efficient technology to reduce lighting and heating costs, the Ralton family are making every effort to cut down on business waste while also trying to encourage their customers to do the same with, for example, the active promotion of bags-for-life.

Commendable runners up for the Sustainable Retailer title were Giacopazzi’s, Milnathort and the Spar, Dalrymple.

Iain Gulland said:

“Zero Waste Scotland is delighted to support the Scottish Grocer Awards 2013 and, in particular, to sponsor the Sustainable Retailer of the Year Award.

“We were looking for a clear commitment to sustainable practices including support for local recycling and sustainability initiatives. We assessed the use of energy efficient equipment and materials in store. We also looked for examples of best practice in minimising packaging and food waste with evidence of the use of recycling to minimise the amount of waste being sent to landfill. We were also delighted to find great examples of staff training, and also evidence of business engagement with customers to facilitate their ability to recycle locally and to promote the use of re-usable bags.

“Scottish retailers are making positive progress in becoming more sustainable. With the introduction of the new Waste (Scotland) Regulations next year, there’s never been a more important time to consider waste. It is not a problem to be dealt with but a valuable resource which can help to cut business costs and to meet customers’ growing expectations for sustainable products and services.

“All three finalists demonstrated highly commendable methods and approach, with Premier Mo’s taking the lead to become a most deserving Zero Waste Scotland Sustainable Retailer of the Year for 2013.”

Congratulations to all the finalists, and especially to Premier Mo’s as the new Sustainable Retailer of the Year.
