Our core expertise

High quality research and evidence underpins our programme development and delivery.

Firstly, it ensures that the impact of our work is recorded and presented in a robust manner. Achieving this involves development and implementation of evaluation methodologies, commissioning independent bodies to carry out monitoring and evaluation and publishing the lessons learned. Secondly, our expertise in this field allows us to provide support and advice on research methods, data and key facts to teams across Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Government.

In addition we have a number of specialist functions that contribute to policy and strategy development in support of the Scottish Government. These include:

  • Policy-based research
  • Economic analysis
  • Environmental analysis
  • Waste data strategy and analysis

Within the lifetime of this programme we will focus this in particular on the following areas:

  • Expanding the evidence available to underpin circular economy policy-making
  • Extending the use of the Scottish Carbon Metric
  • Reviewing producer responsibility options for Scotland
  • Exploring opportunities to further support sustainable procurement
  • Exploring opportunities to accelerate resource efficiency for small to medium sized companies

We are flexible and responsive and recognise that from time to time we may be asked to support the Scottish Government in areas that are not readily identifiable during programme planning.

We also engage widely with partners and stakeholders, in Scotland, the UK and Europe, to support our programme goals and develop opportunities for collaboration.

This is supported by centrally-managed communications delivered strategically through a wide variety of channels, including websites, social media; key events; media relations and customer enquiry services. We work closely with communications functions in our strategic partners and with the communications teams within Scottish Government.
