Market Development Programme: Glass Collection and Re-processing Options Appraisal in Scotland – IMR001-002

Closing date:

The Scottish Government is keen to encourage the closed loop recycling of glass back into glass containers (remelt) in Scotland. The purpose of the work is to provide a comprehensive review of the collection and re-processing systems currently in operation or planned in Scotland relating to glass (cullet) from households and commercial waste sectors including hospitality/catering and retail outlets.  This will take into account both the economic and environmental impacts relating to each of the alternative systems available and thereby form the basis for Zero Waste Scotland to consider possible interventions in both collections and/or re-processing activities in Scotland.

This work is focussed on establishing the most efficient and effective collection and re-processing approach for glass in Scotland in order to maximise the quantity and quality of cullet being recycled back into glass containers. Both the barriers to achieving this goal, as well as the potential interventions required to meet this objective should be explored.
