The aim of this work is to prevent litter in and around schools and encourage recycling on the go around piloted schools.

Zero Waste Scotland wishes to undertake this work because we wish to raise awareness of anti-litter recycling on the go messages in schools and to identify the best ways to communicate and educate school children across Scotland on these subjects.

Requirements or services

Note that contractors will be required to work in partnership with Dundee City Council and foster relationships with schools, local businesses and community groups as part of the project.

Phase 1 Campaign Development

Recruit a Project Lead

Identify and gain approval with 4 Secondary schools and 4 Primary Schools in the Dundee City Council region to take part in this project.

Identify and gain participation approval with 1 large and 1 small business to take part in this project.

Identify and gain participation approval of at least 2 community groups eg Friends of Parks Groups / Local Community Planning Partnerships or Community Councils.

Conduct focus groups with school children to identify barriers, motivators and eating behaviour to littering behaviour change and recycling on the go.  (legal disclosures should be in place to allow either your staff or outsourced staff to work with children).

Identify best ways to engage with the target audience (school Children) including curriculum activities, the Eco Schools program and the best marketing tactics  Upon completion of phase 1, a review meeting will be required with the Council and Zero Waste Scotland, to determine the correct steps for successful campaign completion

Phase 2 Design and production

Identify preferred messages and 2 communication methods (1 traditional marketing method and 1 to include social media engagement such as an APP for communication to School children which should explore how best to engage with school children, what is a permitted method of communication by the school).

Liaise with Dundee City Council cleansing staff re provision and servicing of facilities; to identify target areas: separation of waste / collection of separated waste from recycling on the go bins; and measurement.  Examine how Dundee City Council cleansing and Communications staff can assist with campaign delivery.

All creative development should be subject to testing of the message and the routes to be applied. In your submission, contractors should provide details of how they will approach this.

Phase 3 Monitoring and Evaluation of the Campaign

Measurement of each of the 2 communication methods developed so results can be compared and measured.

Investigate existing collection methods - bins / sites / pick up methods and work with Dundee City Council on the most practical way to measure.

Work with and involve street cleansing staff in target area - separation of waste / collection of separated waste from recycling on the go bins.
