In 2013, 16 areas across the UK were selected. The campaign areas saw an impressive reduction of over 40% in gum dropped on average - and some areas recorded reductions of up to 67%.

Local authorities and Business Improvement Districts are invited to become a partner in the 2014 campaign, funded and organised by gum manufacturers The Wrigley Company, Perfetti Van Melle and Mondelez International (Cadbury), the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments, Zero Waste Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy, the Food and Drink Federation and the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM).

Iain Gulland, Director, Zero Waste Scotland, said:

“Littered chewing gum is particularly hard to tackle as it can’t be swept up, and it’s blighting many towns and villages around Scotland. Valuable resources are being used to remove it. Applying to take part in Bin It Your Way! 2014 is a great opportunity to highlight the issue locally and tackle the blight of chewing gum in your local area.”

Mark Bevan, Head of Campaigns, Keep Scotland Beautiful, said:

“Keep Scotland Beautiful is pleased to support the Bin it Your Way! campaign in Scotland. This is a valuable resource for councils and BIDs as the change in consumer behaviour promoted by the campaign can result in significant savings on cleaning up. We would encourage as many organisations as possible to apply.”
