BBC Good Food Show Scotland Loves Food, Hates Waste

A group of keen, local volunteers dedicated to encouraging others to reduce waste and recycle more are heading to the BBC Good Food Show Scotland this weekend to spread the word even further.

This year, the Love Food Hate Waste team will be back at the show, providing hints and tips on how to make the most of your food, cut down on food waste and save money with live cooking demonstrations from star guests including Mary Berry and Tom Kitchin. 

The show is also taking other steps to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.  Visitors are set to enter on a fully recyclable carpet, recycling bins will be provided throughout the SECC, and leftover promotional materials will also be recycled.

The 150 companies exhibiting have also been asked to commit to reducing their waste at the show by using environmentally friendly materials, re-using where possible, and recycling unavoidable waste.

“This is fun event for food lovers, but there’s a serious message underneath that we can all do a bit more to reduce food waste and help protect the environment.  We’re proud to be promoting Love Food Hate Waste and will be encouraging exhibitors and visitors to minimise food waste from the event.”

 Emma Marsh, Head of Love Food Hate Waste, said:

“We’re delighted BBC Good Food Show Scotland is working with us to help everyone waste less food, save money and help the environment.  In Scotland, we throw away 566,000 tonnes of food every year – two thirds of which could have been easily avoided through better planning, storage and portioning.  And with food waste collections available at the show, even unavoidable food waste can be put to good use.

“The timing for this year’s event couldn’t be better as it coincides with the Scottish Government’s new food waste reduction campaign.  Building on our work to uncover the scale and nature of food waste in Scotland, this is a welcome step in raising further awareness of this expensive and often unnecessary waste and motivating people to take simple steps to avoid it.

“With thousands of visitors flooding through the doors over the three days, it’s a great opportunity for us to get this message across and I’m sure everyone will leave inspired with tips to make the most of mealtimes without needlessly throwing good food, and money, away.”
