The environment is not contained by political boundaries. Everyone shares the Earth’s natural systems and the action of one state can have an effect on another state’s wellbeing. International law often has an indirect effect on domestic legislation by highlighting particular issues, setting generally acceptable standards and putting pressure on states to alter their laws and practices. Although there are no binding international laws that directly relate to household waste legislation, there are a number of key global initiatives that have influenced how we deal with our waste. You can find out more about these global initiatives on the United Nations website.

This section summarises some key pieces of UK and European legislation that have an impact on the way that we deal with our waste. Please select the legislation timeline and information that you would like to view.
